A medical specialist is someone who specializes in a particular field of medicine. Depending on the jurisdiction, they may be known as physicians or doctors .

First, do you have high school courses to your credit that prepare you for university. If you don't or don't have an average over 70% or the average that is needed to enter the program then I would suggest you go to your local college and take pre-nursing or whatever is offered that helps to get you ready for the nursing program. This will last only one year and in that time if you have good marks you can apply to your local university and if you get accepted then I would suggest you stay for the whole four years and get your bachelors because this kinda what I am doing right now. The higher your education the better salary and jobs option you will have. After the four years you need to apply for a license in order to practice in a variety of places. Good Luck!

I've been an occupational therapist for about a year and I love my job! I work in an acute care hospital where I see many different types of patients: surgery, trauma, general medicine, neurology, oncology, pediatrics, geriatrics, burns, psychiatric, etc. People are always asking me "what is the difference between PT and OT???

Physical therapists are known for helping to regain strength and range of motion of the legs, back, neck, and torso. They can work post-operatively with patients to get them walking again, introducing walkers, canes, crutches as needed. They work on balance, endurance, safety, etc. Occupational therapists are mostly known for working with the uppper extremities...we do strengthening, ROM as well. We also address ADL's --activities of daily living (i.e dressing, bathing, grooming, toilet hygiene, feeding). We also work on cognitive training to assist with these ADL's. We come up with creative ideas to assist patients with memory, safety, endurance and introduce adaptive equipment as needed to maximize their participation in activities. OT's are very very FUNCTION based. Activities need to be meaningful and purposeful. You wouldn't have a man putting on lipstick standing at the sink because that's not meaningful to him like it would be for a woman. For example...PT's may just walk a patient and do gait training. OT's are looking for "how far do they need to be able to walk to get to the bathroom; can they stand at the sink for 10 minutes and complete a grooming task independently; can they recite their surgery precautions independently to demonstrate they are safe to go home alone, etc"

Overall, both PT's and OT's are looking to increase patients' function to a maximum level so that they can hopefully return home, they just have two different ways of thinking about things and approaching patients...

As far as job prospects there are always openings for OT's across the country. I get paid very well for just being out of school. I am not wealthy by any means but certainly comfortable...I can afford an apartment, a car, student loans, food, and going out every weekend. On top of that I've already managed to save a lot of money over the past year. The best part is that I don't dread going to work! :)

hope that helps!!

That's nice and everything, but you didn't even give me an idea of the salary range they make. Is it between 20-30k a year, 60-70k a year, a million dollars a year on average? Or is it poverty pay of around 10k a year? A range would be nice. Thanks.

Hey! Yes, you must first complete prerequisite courses before applying to the program, apply to the program, and then if you're accepted complete two years of course work and clinical work. Upon graduating from the program, you must pass a national board and a clinical board. This is the most expensive technical program of all the other 2-year health programs offered at my college. I completed my degree and test, and now it's been three months, I'm still unemployed and more broke than I was while attending college. I would highly recommend physical therapy assistant, occupational therapy assistant, registered nurse, surgical technologist, or invest more time in your career and become a dentist. Most dentist are only opened Monday through Thursday; 8-4 or 7-4. This would still allow you to spend plenty of time on your family or social life while making more than enough to provide for your family. Hope this helps!

There are very few jobs available right now for dental hygienists AND it is difficult to get into a DH program and to graduate from it. It is just as hard and competitive to get in as RN programs are.
Other good paying jobs that have the choice of working a few days a week are dental assistants and RNs.

If you became a certified dental assistant and got a certificate from a community college then you may have already taken some hygiene related classes. Although it still takes 2 years to get your hygiene degree. Right now there are not many hygiene jobs available. Also most hygiene jobs do NOT offer any benefits (health insurance, vacation, etc) that you enjoy as a dental assistant.
I would advise you find another assisting job at better pay or become a surgical tech or nurse.

Hello, Some Dental Hygiene schools do give credit for experience, but only after you are able to prove your experience was viable....Also various schools have different requirements time wise...If you go to a community or state college you will most likely find the course will be between two and three years...Some community colleges make it a two year course...I'm not aware of any VoTech schools that teach a Hygienist course....In larger cities you will find specialty schools that teach various health related courses and sometimes they are streamlined and require less time.......Remember this though...You need to pick a school with a quality education background so as to get a quality education...There are no short cuts when it comes to providing a health related services. Good luck and I wish you well.
